University of Surrey – Professional Training Year Placements

University of Surrey logoAt the University of Surrey, we have a strong history of enhancing employability skills alongside studies, thanks to our Professional Training placements. The majority of Surrey students complete a placement year in industry during their degree.

The basic requirements of our placement programme are below:

  • Ideally the placement should be a full year and start in July, August or September. We can accommodate earlier or later than this timeframe, as long as the placement covers the time requirement (see next point) and does not interfere with the student’s academic term dates
  • Please be aware that the minimum requirement of hours that can be considered for a placement is 1125 hours (equivalent to working full time for 30 working weeks), and this excludes any time taken as annual leave
  • The student is to be provided with a designated manager and training throughout the course of the placement.  On the job training is fine
  • The placement company must be happy for the student to be visited at their place of work during the course of the placement, and the workplace supervisor must be prepared to be involved in these meetings
  • The student must be able to return to the University in time for the next academic year (end of September the following year)

For our Mechanical Engineering Sciences students their placement should be engineering /technology based, hence enhancing the experience and knowledge associated with their undergraduate medical/mechanical engineering degree programmes. More generic activities such as quality management, project management and for medical engineering students, activities involving medical practice are also acceptable.

We strongly encourage paid placements. However, if you are not in a position to offer a full salary for the position(s) you are recruiting for, please be aware that our students will have the following financial commitments for their placement year, and we would be happy to discuss with you further alternative arrangements that you may consider wanting to put in place:

  • University fees of £1,850
  • Private accommodation costs
  • Travel expenses to and from the work place

There are no costs involved with us advertising and promoting opportunities for you.

If you are interested in discussing this further, please contact Rose Leek, Professional Training and Employability Officer, at
