Telecare Glossary of Terms

Telecare is defined as the delivery of health and social care services in a home setting through the use of sensor, information and communication technologies.  In the UK, 17.5 million people are estimated to have a long-term, chronic condition which can be addressed by telecare. This market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 28% from 2004-2010.

The major drivers in this market include:

  • Increasing incidence of chronic illnesses
  • Ageing population
  • Time and costs associated with hospital and clinic consultations

Technologies in this sector can include telephony; sensors, detectors and alarms; intelligent homes which store a recorded pattern of the patient to compare with outliers; monitors for heart rate and glucose level; virtual visiting which enables a link from the home to the GP’s surgery.  With such varied capabilities, telecare has many different market players who coordinate a service offering.
