South East England is privileged and proud to boast the largest concentration of health technology companies and academic institutions anywhere in the world outside the US. The Greater South East, including Oxford, Cambridge and London, is probably the biggest health technology cluster in the world.
The SEEDA region is home to almost 1000 health technology companies and 22 universities. The sector generates revenues of £58 bn annually, making this cluster a major contributor to the regional and UK economies. Put simply, this sector is of vital importance not only to our health, but to the financial health of the SEEDA region and to the country.
Key facts about the South East health technology sector:
- There are 51 NHS Trusts employing over 186,000 people. The total NHS budget for the region exceeds £10 bn.
- 14 of the world’s top 20 pharmaceutical companies (by revenue) are located in the region, with 300 pharmaceutical companies in total. This industry generates over £40 bn in revenue and employs over 130,000 people.
- The medical biotechnology sector has about 120 companies – 27% of the UK’s total.
- There are approximately 300 medical device companies, generating almost 15% of the UK’s sales in this sector.
- There are almost 250 diagnostic companies, 14% of the UK’s total.
The sector employs over 200,000 people, including associated services, and 30% of the UK’s life science research and development occurs in the region. As you can see, we have large clusters concentrated around the region’s centres of excellence, including in Oxford, Thames Valley, Southampton and Brighton.
