Fine Chemicals Trade Mission to Japan

Start:23 Mar 2007 - 09:00
End : 27 Mar 2007 - 18:00

At the recent CIA International Business Promotions committee meeting it was suggested, for 2007, to widen this successful trade mission initiative of showcasing UK expertise by visiting and presenting to Japanese pharmaceutical companies, to incorporate growing opportunities in other high-tech chemical using industries in Japan e.g. electronics.
The CIA are therefore calling for expressions of interest for a proposed fine chemicals trade mission to Japan week commencing 23rd April 2007 (post-CPhI Japan).
Background to 2007 focus:
The original idea was proposed at a recent CIA International Business Promotions Committee by technology companies that provide scavenger catalysts that are used to purify chemical mixtures. This was supported by fine chemical companies that could produce high purity chemicals for next generation colour screens. It was thought that going to see pharma companies immediately after CPhI Japan (ie in the w/b 23 April 2007) might not be as productive as seeking out new opportunities in other hi-tech chemical-using industries. Chemical suppliers would learn more from such visits than they would in visiting familiar companies in the pharma sector. This should not be seen as a change in the current priority to focus on the pharma sector in Japan. That is still as strong as ever but other hi-tech opportunities should not be missed exclusively focusing on pharma.
Obviously, the Commercial Team based at the British Embassy in Japan will need to know what are the UK technical capabilities before approaching local industry. These details are being made available to industry contacts so that those interested can advise of their interest in making contact with R&D departments in the electronics sector*** in Japan or other hi-tech sectors. There is a need for more than just three or four expressions of interest to make a mission viable.
*** The electronics sector, which is increasingly seeking higher chemical specifications for HDTVs and micro circuits, is an obvious target sector. However, if there is sufficient interest in focusing on R&D contacts in other non-pharma sectors which rely on high-value chemicals and services then this will be considered.
