Sleep and its Disorders Clinical Experience Programme

This two-day programme will provide participants with an introductory overview of the current understanding of sleep and its disorders.
Sleep physiology, including its regulation, sleep disturbances and the measurement of sleep will be presented within taught sessions.
Workshop sessions will introduce delegates to the environment of a sleep research unit, investigative techniques in sleep research and patient experiences of sleep disorders.
The second day of the course will review psychological aspects of sleep, including assessment of waking performance. Psychopharmacological perspectives on the manipulation of sleep will include a review by potential targets, by drug group and by clinical indication.
Workshop sessions will include computer based neurobehavioural exercises, a session on the application of questionnaires in sleep investigation and a practical session on the use of the actigraph and its interpretation.
The programme closes with a clinical research module. This module will review the current challenges and practical issues inherent in mounting studies in sleep. The course closes with a multidisciplinary discussion on strategies for optimising clinical studies.
